Sioux Center News, December 11, 1991

Albert Bogaard, a former resident of Sioux County and one of the nation's few remaining World War I veterans, died November 20, just a few days before his 102nd birthday, at Lakeview Rest Home in Firth, Nebraska.

Survivors in the area are Phyllis (Te Selle) Clemens, a niece, of Sioux Center; Milo Bogaard, nephew, Sheldon; Milton Bogaard, nephew, Orange City; Richard Bogaard, nephew, Sibley; and Anna Jean Hofmeyer, niece, Hospers.

Services were November 23 at Firth Reformed Church with the Revs. Richard Westra and Calvin Bogaard officiating. Military services were conducted by American Legion Post 295. Burial was in the Firth cemetery.

Bogaard attended country school taught by his sister, Jeannette. He farmed with his brother, Nic, for a number of years, served in World War I and returned to Iowa after the war.

He acquired a farm in North Dakota but it was lost in the Great Depression of the 1930s. He continued to work in North Dakota.

After the death of Jeannette's husband, the Rev. John W. Te Selle, and the death of her son, 1st Lt. Jim Te Selle, in Germany during World War II, Bogaard moved to Firth to make his home with his sister and her daughters, Muriel, Amy and Phyllis. Another sister, Winifred, lived nearby in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He worked at Harms Lumber Company for many years and was a member of Firth Reformed Church.

After his sister's death, Bogaard continued to live in the Te Selle house, keeping a place for his nieces to come home to.

Bogaard became a resident of Lakeview Rest Home on December 7, 1985, his 95th birthday.

Delivering an address at Bogaard's funeral, Clemens said "Uncle Al" will be remembered fondly and lovingly by many longtime friends, nephews and nieces for his oft-quoted terse and pithy sayings, a wry wit and his sometimes gruff exterior, but also for his gentle, loving heart.
