Sioux Center News, March 8, 1962

Funeral services were held at the American Reformed Church in Hull Saturday for Herbert Bottenberg Bolks, 84, retired banker, and former deputy treasurer of Sioux County, who died at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City March 1.

Death was attributed to complications of advanced age following successful brain surgery which was performed 10 days prior to his death.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H. C. Ringenoldus and burial was made in Hope Cemetery, with Kraai Funeral Home of Hull in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Bottenberg Bolks was born to Mr. & Mrs. Gerrit Bolks of Zeeland, Michigan on September 12, 1877. His family moved to Orange City in 1878 and it was there that he grew to manhood.

He was educated in the public schools at Orange City and was graduated summa cum laude from Iowa State College with a bachelor of arts degree in 1899.

After teaching in the rural schools of Sioux County for a number of years, he accepted a position as deputy auditor in Lynn County, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he met and later married Maude E. Baker on June 14, 1911. To this union were born two sons, Paul and Gordon.

Following several years of employment in the Security National Bank in Sioux City he accepted a position in the Iowa State Bank at Hull. The remaining 42 years he was a resident of Hull, although for approximately 20 years he served as deputy treasurer of Sioux County. For a short time he served as town clerk in Hull but he was forced to retire because of the illness of his wife who preceded him in death in May, 1957.

Because of Mr. Bolks deep interest in youth and education, an interest which he retained until his death, he faithfully served on the Hull Public School board for 20 years. His many friends and those with whom he came in contact will remember him as a kindly person and a gentleman of high ideals and moral standards. Memorial gifts are being presented to the Hull Public Library, a project in which he was very interested.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude, two sisters, Mrs. Albert De Bey and Mrs. Abel Thompson, one brother, Seine.

Survivors include two sons: Dr. H. P. of Hull and Gordon K. of Sioux City; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Claus Ehlers, Woodstock, IL, and Mrs. C. W. Donaldson, North Manchester, IN, and one brother, Dr. H. G. Bolks of Sioux City.
