Hawarden Independent of Dec 21, 1933

Mrs. A. Van Kalsbeek of Center township passed away at her home last Friday morning, following an illness of several months from cancer and complications. Mrs. Van Kalsbeek became sick last May and spent several weeks in the Hull hospital and later was brought home and was cared for by a trained nurse and members of her family but her ailment failed to respond to treatment and after many weeks of acute suffering death came to release her.

Funeral services were held Monday from the First Christian Reformed church in Ireton with Rev. Dykstra of Sioux Center in charge. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Nellie Statema Van Kalsbeek was born July 27, 1870 in Osterbeirum, Holland. As a young woman of twenty she came to the United States with her parents and two brothers and one sister. On Feb. 4, 1902, she was united in marriage with A. (Andrew) Van Kalsbeek at Orange City and the young people immediately settled on a farm in West Branch township, two miles north of Sioux Center They moved onto a farm north of Ireton in Center township 16 years ago which has since been her home.

Eleven children were born to ;his union, five of whom preceded their mother in death, Bertha as a young woman of twenty, and four children passed away in infancy. The living children are Henrietta, Minnie, Jennie, Nellie and George, who with the loving husband and father mourn the loss of their mother and wife. She also leaves two brothers, Klaus Statema of Volga, S. D., and Peter Statema of Center township. A sister, Mrs. K. Terpstra, passed away just seven months ago at her home at Ogilvie, Minn. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews and scores of relatives and friends, who mourn the passing of this good woman.

Mrs. Van Kalsbeek was a fine example of Christian womanhood. Her first interest was her church and the welfare of her home and family. Her heart was ever tender toward any neighbor or friend who was in trouble or grief and many tell of her kindly ministrations in their time of need. She will be sadly missed in her home and neighborhood. She bore her sickness, which at times was intense pain, with fortitude and seldom complained and was ever grateful to her loved ones who did everything possible for her comfort.

Sincere sympathy of many friends goes out to the members of the family in the loss of their loved one. God graciously has spared her many years To guide and bless us, but the bitter tears Will come unbidden—we miss her so, Her helpful ways, her smile, and yet we know, It is God's will that she should leave us now; And to his will, our own we humbly bow, Feeling that Heaven is nearer and more fair, Because our beloved mother waits us there.
