HOSPERS—Anthony J. "Spike" Van Zee, 93, Hospers, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Services were Saturday, Aug. 25, at First Reformed Church in Hospers, with the Rev. Milt Sikkema officiating. Burial was at Hospers Cemetery, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Anthony J. "Spike" Van Zee, the son of John and Tillie (Bartman) Van Zee, was born on Aug. 27, 1918, in Boyden, IA. The family later moved to the Everly and Sanborn, IA areas. On April 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Vivian Te Grotenhuis of Newkirk, IA. They spent most of their married life in the Hospers, IA, area - where they raised their three children, Dennis, Linda and Beverly. During his working years, Spike was engaged in farming and later drove truck.

He enjoyed woodworking and crafted rocking chairs and other knickknacks. He was a
member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers. He passed away at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, on Aug. 21, 2012, at the age of 93.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Vivian, on Aug. 18, 2004; two brothers; three sisters; four stepbrothers and two stepsisters. Left to cherish his memory are his children and their families: Dennis and his wife, Carrie of Sioux Falls, SD, Linda and her husband, Jim Stanley of Wilmington, NC, and Beverly and her husband, Arlin of Paris, TX; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
