Lois Ruth Kooi

Lois Ruth Kooi, 78, of San Diego, Calif., died Sept. 18, 2012. Memorial service was at Del Mar
Beach, San Diego, on Sept. 23.

Ruth Kooi was born Jan. 28, 1933, in Hawarden, daughter of Ben and Lura (Brown) Kooi. She lived with her family on a farm near Lebanon, then moved to Carmel and later to Pella. She attended Pella Christian Grade School, Pella Christian High School, earned a B.A. degree at Calvin College and an M.A. degree at the University of Michigan. She was a social worker and worked in an adoption agency for a short time in Toledo, Ohio. She continued in the same profession when she moved to San Diego. She had to retire from her work in the mid-70s after a bicycle accident.

Survivors include a brother, Earl Kooi of Orange City; four sisters, Esther Vander Plas of Le Mars, Margaret Dickerson of Oskaloosa, Joyce Van Wyk of Pella and Florence Blom of EUisville, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Kooi; and two nephews.
