Anthony "Tony" Gerrit Burgers, 83, of Le Mars died Sunday, December 25, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Carlsen
Funeral Home in Le Mars with Pastor Jan Christensen of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Luther- Whidden American Legion Post #78 will be 1 p.m. Friday, at the National Cemetery in Spencer, Neb.

Burgers was born Nov. 6, 1928, on the family farm in Welcome Township east of Sioux Center to Gerrit and Hendrika (Vander Pol) Burgers. He was raised on the farm and attended country school. His father died when he was a teenager and he left school to help his mother with the farm. He served his country in the U.S. Army from October 23, 1951, until his honorable discharge on October 2, 1953.

Shortly after his discharge, he began his career with Zenith-Wincharger in Sioux City. He married Helen Kopecky Aug. 10, 1965, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. The couple made their home in Le Mars. He continued working at the plant until it closed in the early 1980s. He then worked for Mid-Sioux Opportunities for a few years and later for the City of Le Mars, Parks Department. He had also worked part-time as a security guard for Wells' Dairy. He loved to work on his acreage and care for his animals. He provided eggs to several neighbors and friends throughout the years. He will be remembered as a very helpful and independent man. His wife died December 29, 2008.

Survivors are a sister, Winnie Kamminga of Crescent; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Henry (Mary) Burgers; and a brother- in-law, Arnold Kamminga
