Mrs. Luella Smit, age 83, of Boyden, IA, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, AZ.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, March 14, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Boyden. The Rev. Matthew Draffen will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden.

Luella Gertrude was born on April 29, 1929, in Boyden, the daughter of John E. and Martha (Mulder) Vermeer. She was raised near Boyden, where she attended the Sheridan No. 6 rural school and graduated from the Boyden High School. She also took a secretarial course at Northwestern College in Orange City, after which she was employed as a secretary at the Silent Sioux Oil Burner Corporation in Orange City, IA.

On February 9, 1949, she married Cornelius Smit in Boyden. They made their home near Boyden, where she was a homemaker. In 1990, they retired and moved into Boyden. They wintered in Arizona for 25 years.

Luella was a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden, where she taught Sunday school and catechism classes. She also belonged to the Senior Saints and served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts, reading, walking, and exercising. Her family was extremely important to her, and she was always willing to help where needed.

Survivors include her husband of more than 64 years, “Casey”; a daughter, Laura Kay, and her husband, Tom L. Bonestroo, of Hull, IA; a son and his wife, Dennis Jay and Judy Smit, of Centennial, CO; a daughter-in-law, Deanna Hamlin, of Springfield, MN; eight grandchildren, Jason Wynia, and his wife, Misty, of Casper, WY; Stephanie Hamlin and Jeffrey Hamlin, both of Springfield, MN; Rebecca Baatz, and her husband, Chad, of Hospers, IA; Jodi Bonestroo-Harris, and her husband, Steve, of Malibu, CA; Tony Bonestroo, and his wife, Jessica, of Hull, IA; Danielle Tempel, and her husband, Nick, of Westminister, CO; and Michael Smit, of Centennial, CO; two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Levi Hamlin; a sister, Marjorie Chassels, of Highland, IL; and two sisters-in-law, Jo Vermeer, of Sheldon, IA, and Bertha Vermeer, of Windom, MN.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Carey Lee and Larry Ray Smit; and two brothers, Edgar and Harvey Vermeer.
