June 14, 1923 - March 14, 2013

Mr. John Vogel, age 89, of Orange City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, March 18, at 10:00am, at the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Keady will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

John Reinders Vogel was born on June 14, 1923, at Orange City, the son of Andrew and Jennie (Reinders) Vogel. He was raised in the Orange City area, where he graduated from the Christian School. He also attended the Western Christian High School in Hull. At the end of World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard.

On February 4, 1946, he married Doris Emeline Mulder in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where he was a partner in the Vogel Paint Company from 1946 to 1978.

John was a member of the Dover Avenue Alliance Church, the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, and the Lions Club, all in Orange City. He also served on the board of directors of the Orange City Christian School and was a volunteer fireman in Orange City.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing, golfing, traveling, volunteering, wood-working, and spending time at Vogel’s Nest in Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife of more than 67 years; three sons and their wives, John “Jack” and Anita Vogel, of Orange City; Jerry and Cindy Vogel, of Marshall, Minnesota; and Steve and Diane Vogel, of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Dr. Bruce Jon Hagen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; fifteen grandchildren, Jonathan Vogel, and his fiancé, Julie, Joel Vogel, and his wife, Lisa, Jacqueline Vogel, Joshua Vogel, and his wife, Dr. Shiho, Morgan, and her husband, Casey Popenoe, Jeremy Vogel, Jason Vogel, and his wife, Kristin, Michael Vogel, Kevin Vogel, and his wife, Jessica, Angela Vogel, Dr. Christopher Hagen, and his wife, Dr. Ashley, Emily Hagen, Abigail Hagen, Sean Hagen, and Micah Hagen; thirteen great-grandchildren; and four brothers and two sisters, George Vogel, of Orange City, Bertha Stephenson, of Sioux City, and Frank Vogel, Arthur Vogel, and his wife, Shirley, Marvin Vogel, and his wife, Joy, and Margaret Jean, and her husband, Roger Roghair, all of Orange City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Jane Vogel; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Vogel and Lois Vogel; and a brother-in-law, Pat Stephenson.
