Hawarden Independent of May 10, 1934

Was 67 Years of Age and Lived in Sioux County 50 Years. Funeral Held Wednesday Afternoon Mrs. Emma Osterday passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Smith, in this city at 1:45 Monday morning. Pneumonia was the cause of her death. She had been in failing health for some time past but was up and around the house until Tuesday of last week when she was confined to her bed, having contracted pneumonia.

Emma Isabel Griffith was born at Big Patch, Wis., on Nov. 29, 1866. She lived there until she was about 16 years of age when she came to Iowa with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Griffith, in the spring of 1883, when they settled on a farm north of Ireton. She had been a resident of Sioux county for about 50 years and of Hawarden for about 43 years. On Nov. 30, 1884, she was united in marriage with Lewis F. Osterday at Hudson, then Eden, S. D.

Two children were born to this union, Mrs. Florence E.. Smith, with whom the deceased made her home, and Charles William, who died in infancy. Mrs. Osterday also leaves an adopted son, Herbert J. Osterday of Dell Rapids, S. D., who was present at her bedside until the last. Besides these she is survived by four grandchildren, Dorothy, Herbert Jr. and Robert Osterday of Dell Rapids and Donald Smith of this city, also two sisters and one brother, Mrs.
Susan Kersey of Sioux City, who was here assisting in her care during the last illness; Albert Griffith of Ireton and Mrs. Ettie DuVall of Glade Park, Colo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Mrs. Osterday was a member of the Women's Relief Corps and, the Woodmen Circle lodge and members of these organizations attended the funeral services, also several members of Silver Leaf and Oakdale Groves of Sioux City.

The deceased was ever a loving mother, sister and friend, always ready and willing to do good for others until failing health prevented. Her twin sister, Mrs. Dell Edwards of Le Mars, passed away Dec. 24, 1932, and the grief of her passing was too great for her to bear and was more or less the cause of her fast failing health.

Funeral services were held at the Associated church at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, Rev. T. H. Harding officiating, and burial was made in Grace Hill
cemetery. Relatives and friends from out of town in attendance at the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Osterday and family, Dell Rapids, S. D.; Mrs. Susan Kersey, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Cooper, Mrs. Nellie Wells, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reid, Mrs. Victor Templar and daughter and Mrs. Laura Woodward, Sioux City, and Albert Griffith, Ireton.
