Leona Gertrude Otten, 83, of Hawarden, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Funeral services were June 21 at the Hawarden Community Church with the Rev. Nathan De Vries officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Leona Gertrude Otten was born January 28,1920 in Orange City, the daughter of John and Emma (De Jager) Kamstra. She married David Otten on Aug. 18,1943 in Orange City. They lived in the Canton and Hudson areas before moving to Hawarden in Leona Otten 1950. She was a custodian for the City of Hawarden and also was an assistant cook for many years at the Hawarden Senior Citizen Center. Mr. Otten died Aug. 31,1983.

Mrs. Otten was a member of the Hawarden Community Church. Survivors include her mother, Emma Kamstra of Orange City, two sons, Dick and John both of Hawarden; a daughter, Elaine Phipps of Marysville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill of Sheldon, Tunis of Quincy, Wash, and Peter of Orange City; a sister, Jean Goslinga of Orange City; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Otten and Anna Otten both of Spink, S.D. and Cora Peterson of Hawarden. Leona was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Jennie; and a brother, Wilbert.
