Death Claims Former Citizen
Another former old time resident was buried in Pleasant Hill cemetery Monday afternoon when G. L. Riley was laid in his last resting place. He passed away at his home, 1907 West 5th Street, Sioux City, Saturday, Sept. 28th, at 11:00 a. m. of infirmities accompanying old age, having passed the proverbial three score years and ten by more than twelve years. He was at the time of his death 82 years, 4 months and 7 days of age having lived a life of usefulness as well as helpfulness.

George L. Riley was born in Everett, Pa., May 21, 1853. He came west at the age of 17 years and settled in Livingston county, Mo. In 1877 he was united in marriage with Katherine Burbage. They lived in Missouri until 1903 when they came to Ireton. For the next 17 years they made their home in Ireton and in those years Mr. Riley was active in the community life as well as in school and church. In 1906 he was elected as a member of the school board and served for 12 years and several years of this time he Was president of the board. It was during his presidency that plans were made and executed for the building of our present, fine school building, his name appearing on the bonds as president of the board. He was a member of the Methodist church and there also filled positions as superintendent of the Sunday school and member of the 1920 they went to Ark., where they
spent five years, returning to Iowa in 1925 and settling in Sioux City where he made his home continuously since that time.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Clarence of Smithland, Iowa, and Allen of Sioux City, and three daughters, Mrs. C. L. Kidwiler of Winner, S. D., Mrs. Clayton Jones of Sioux City and Mrs. Ralph Van Hooser of Oto, Iowa. He also leaves five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The children were all present at the funeral which was held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Ireton with Rev. C. W. Tompkins in charge. A quartette composed of E. E. Gandy, Mrs. Hubert Zilm, Mrs. Arthur Bartlett and Frank Crane, rendered two beautiful hymns and Mr. Crane sang "Crossing the Bar." The following old friends and neighbors acted as pall bearers: L. D. Satterlee, John Chenhall, R. J. Smith, A, M. Richardson, Q. L. Houlten and J. A. Lindenman. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. So another has crossed over, one who was quiet yet always active for the beat interests of all, a deep thinker, a hard worker. Monuments to his trade, that of a carpenter, can be seen on every hand as many buildings in the community testify to his labors. As a husband and father, friend and neighbor, he will long be remembered because of the fine qualities he passed on to others.
