Arloa Muilenburg, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 28, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Arloa Johanna was born on June 17, 1920, near Orange City, the daughter of Hubert I. and Gertrude (Pennings) Muilenburg. She grew up on a farm near Orange City.

She received her education in the Orange City Public Schools. Her further education was completed at Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, Westmar College in Le Mars, and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she was awarded her Master of Arts degree. Additional graduate credits were earned at Drake University in Des Moines, the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

During her teaching career of 46 years, she taught in the Hull, Alton, and Orange City School Districts. Following the combination of the Maurice and Orange City districts, she was asked to become curriculum coordinator for the merged schools. After serving in that capacity for seven years, she chose to return to the classroom, where she completed her career teaching third grade.

Arloa was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society. In 1990, she was recognized by Northwestern College in Orange City as Centennial Year Honor Alumnus for her contributions to the field of elementary education.

She was a member of the American Reformed Church in Orange City, where she served as an elder on the consistory, taught Sunday school classes, and participated in the women’s organizations.
During her early years, she was active in Christian Endeavor at church, a local 4-H club, and Y-Teens. After retiring in 1985, she taught a student in Friendship Bible Study classes for ten years and participated in the literature department of the Orange City Women’s Club. She was also active in the Sioux County Historical Society and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Auxiliary, both in Orange City.

Arloa enjoyed reading, crocheting, and traveling, often with her sister, attending elder hostels. In addition, she took many of her elderly friends shopping. She was a survivor of breast cancer for more than 45 years. She lived in Orange City most of her life, moving to the Pioneer Memorial Home in later years. She then transferred to the Kosgrove Estate in Sioux Center and returned to Orange City and the Heritage House Nursing Home. Since June of 2012, she has lived at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Survivors include a nephew and his wife: Mark and Vicki Muilenburg, of Omaha, Nebraska; three nieces and their husbands: Nancy and Carl Moss, of Boyden; Marilyn and Gregory Zeuske, of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Deedra and Marlin Johnson, of Maxwell; thirteen great-nephews and great-nieces and their spouses: Todd Muilenburg, Kristen (Muilenburg) and Trent Johnson, Stephanie (Moss) and Eric Thunstedt, Dr. Sherri (Moss) and David Ver Hoef, Curtis and Sunny Moss, Aaron Zeuske, Quinton Zeuske, Adam Zeuske, Tara Zeuske, Scott and Jessica Zeuske, Shelby Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Keith Johnson; several great-grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brother and his wife: Irwin and Anne Muilenburg; a sister and her husband: Della and Thompson Ashby; and a nephew: Jay Ashby.
