January 6, 1931 - February 27, 2013
Mrs. Carolyn De Haan, age 82, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 2, at 10:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Carolyn was born on January 6, 1931, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Teunis and Hattie (Schriever) De Bondt. She was raised at Sioux Center, where she graduated from the Sioux Center Community High School.

On May 11, 1951, she married Wallace Eugene De Haan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed northwest of Orange City until 1966, when they moved into town. Together they operated the Park View Café and worked at the Pantry Café, both in Orange City. She was also a telephone operator and did factory work at Otis and K-Products, both in Orange City. On September 29, 2002, Wally passed away in Sioux City.

She was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school classes when her children were young. She was a leader for the Blue Birds and the Cub Scouts. She greatly enjoyed raising roses, fishing, cooking, bowling, playing bingo and cards, listening to Daniel O’Donnell CDs, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her four children, Larry De Haan, and his wife, LeeAnn, of Orange City; Barb Bergwall, of Owatonna, Minnesota; Wanda De Haan and Kurt Carr, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Brian De Haan, of Alton; four grandchildren and their spouses, Nathan and Lezlee Bergwall, of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Natalie and Eric Krueger, of Owatonna, Minnesota; Zachary De Haan, of Alton; and Tanya De Haan, of Orange City; seven great-greandchildren, Emma, Adyson and Libby Bergwall; Evan and Emmit Krueger; and Dawson and Dakota Reis; two sisters, Marie Winterfeld, of Sioux Center; and Madeline Koening, of Bellflower, California; a brother, Evert De Bondt, and his wife, Harriet, of Sioux Center; and a sister-in-law, Nancy De Bondt, of Sioux Center.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Garrit, Bernie, Henry, Bill, and Tom De Bondt; two brothers-in-law, Elmer Winterfeld and “Buck” Koening; and a sister-in-law, Doris De Bondt.
