Hawarden Independent of April 23, 1914
Was One of Hawarden's Prominent and Esteemed Citizens Daniel Gregg, one of Hawarden's prominent and well-to-do citizens, died at his home in this city Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. The deceased was born in Ramelton, county Donegal, Ireland, April 15, 1845.
He, with his father's family, came to Ontario, Can., in 1865, and two years later to Cook county, IL., where they remained for two years. From there they came to central Iowa. Here he lived for several years and Was married June 5, 1884, to Lillie A. Sharp, at Gladbrook, Iowa. From Glad brook the family removed in 1901 to Cherokee, Iowa, where they remained one year then came to Hawarden, where they have since made their home. Mrs. Gregg died April 20, 1905. Eight Children were born to them, all of whom are living, and whose privilege it was to be with their father during the last weeks of his illness.
They are Mrs. Stewart Hall of Kingsley, Iowa; Mrs. Elmer Reed of Spencer, SD; Roy, John, Isabel, Edna, Dan and Florence, all of Hawarden. Besides his children there are left two sisters and two brothers. M. Gregg, Mrs. Annie Crouch and Mrs. John Smith of Hawarden, and Richard Gregg of Tipton, IA. Funeral services were held at the home at tow o’clock this after noon, Rev. V. A. Weir conducting the services.
For many years M. Gregg had been in partnership with is brother, M. Gregg in the stock business and in extensive farming operations. They first engaged in the stock business at Gladbrook and then purchased large land interests together in Cherokee county. In 1902 they came to Hawarden and purchased 800 acres of choice farm land in this vicinity, paying what was considered at that time a very high price, $60 per acre in cash. That their judgment was good is evidenced by the fact that these farms are worth three times that price today.
Business methods were apparent in all his transactions, and prior to his death he had all of his affairs carefully arranged to the minutest detail. He was a man of quiet demeanor, but was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.
