Nellie Franken

Nellie Franken, 83, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, December 5, at Kosgrove Estates in Sioux Center. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carmel Reformed Church in Carmel with the Rev. Mark Heijerman officiating.. Burial was in Carmel Cemetery.

Mrs. Franken was born to John and Elsie Broek on May 26,1918, on a farm near Sanborn. She attended country school two miles east of Carmel through the eighth grade.

She married James Franken on May 26, 1939, at her parents' home. The couple lived on various farms and acreages in the Sioux Center area. They moved to Sioux Center where they resided for 26 years. She was employed at Schouten's grocery store and Hy-Vee and also was involved with milking while living
on the farm.

She was a member of Carmel Reformed Church her entire married life. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of Ladies Aid. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, crocheting and visiting the nursing home as a "friendly visitor."
The couple enjoyed 24 winters at Conquistador in Mesa, Arizona.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Art and his wife Eldean of Sioux Center; a son-in-law, Gerrit Davelaar and Helma of Inwood; a son, John and his wife Phyllis of Mesa; 10 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; three brothers, Bill
and Ina of Orange City, Cornie and Birdie of Sioux Center and John and Gert of Tea, South Dakota; five sisters, Margaret De Koter of Orange City, Mathilda and John Van Beek of Ireton, Bertha and Clarence Klein of Orange City, Elsie and Gaynor Te Grotenhuis of Sioux Center and Chris and Pete Schouten of Inwood; two sisters-in-law, Cornelia Broek of Rock Valley and Cora Broek of Sioux Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Eleanor; two brothers, Dave and Arend; and one grandson.
