Spanish War Veteran Dies

Jack Tanner, 79, a veteran of the Spanish American War and World War I, died Wednesday, May 5, at the Veterans hospital at Knoxville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon (Thursday) at the Barnard Funeral home, with Rev. Paul Williams of the Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill cemetery with the Two Oakes Post of the American Legion in charge of the last rites.

Mr. Tanner came to Hawarden after he was discharged from the service after World War I. He was a native of Georgia. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by an uncle. He has no known living relatives.

After coming to Hawarden he worked for Jim Robertson for 12 years and for two or three years he was employed by R. C. Robertson. He was taken ill about two years ago.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Tanner, no name, born 8 Nov 1878, died 5 May 1954, WWI vet, buried Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden.

Previous news articles show him to have been committed to the State Hospital at Cherokee for insanity (Sioux County Capital, June 21, 1951), with Earl V. Slife appointed guardian of his property (Hawarden Independent, December 27, 1951).
