Pioneer Gone

The death of D. Lyzen, pioneer resident of Alton, occurred at his home Friday afternoon [April 8] at 1:30 o'clock, after several months illness. Mr. Lyzen was 81 years of age. He was born at Alma, the Netherlands, in 1846, married to Miss Johanna Holterman on November 15th, 1873, and 1882 came to the United States. The family settled on a farm northeast of Alton. 7 children were born to the couple, but only one, Albert Lyzen of Alton, survives. Mr. Lyzen is also survived by his wife and five grandchildren. The couple lived on the farm until 1914, when they moved to Alton. Mr. Lyzen was a familiar figure about town and will be missed by many besides his immediate family. Mrs. T. Van Roekel was brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Lyzen, having lived with the family until her 18th year. Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the First Ref. church.

NOTE:
(The Sioux County Cemetery Index gives his forename as Daniel, as do newspaper notices regarding settlement of his estate.)
---------------------------------
NOTE from a descendant in the home country:
The couple had three children already here, one 9a girl) died before leaving the country, all born in the city of Holten, among them Albert who is on your site too. The second son Willem born 1880 is not to be found in the US Census of 1885, so died early in Sioux County I guess, since nothing is to be found here.
Father Daniël was born at the village of Almen (not Alma) on 18-12-1846 in the province of Gelderland. The marriage data are correct. His wife's data are correct too, but her birth place Holten lies in the province of Overijssel (not Overijsfel). Note that the typical Dutch letter 'ij' in the States changes into 'y' like it changed my name Nawijn into Nawyn too for emigrated relatives of mine.
Kind regards
Wim Nawijn
