Dena F. Lyzen, age 81, of Orange City, died Monday, March 12 at her residence.

Dena Fredericka was born Feb. 4, 1909, near Alton, the daughter of Albert Lyzen and Alice Van Engen Lyzen.

She attended a rural school in Floyd Township and graduated from the Alton High School in 1926. She attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, for two years and later graduated from Westmar College, Le Mars, in 1964.

She was a teacher in rural schools in Sioux County for 14 years. She then taught at Maurice Elementary School from 1946-51 and at the Orange City Elementary School from 1951-74 when she retired.

In 1979 she attended the Northwest Iowa Technical College, graduating as a certified nurses aide and homemaker health aide. Since then she has assisted many clients in their homes.

She made her home with her parents until they passed away, her mother in 1963 and her father in 1965. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Josephine Goodlaxson in 1978.

Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Onen (Gertrude) Steines of Hospers; two brothers, Dan A. of Hale, Mo., and Gerrit of Hull; three nieces, Mrs. Allen (Marlene Goodlaxson) Plesek of Brooklyn, Mrs. Ward (Linda Lyzen) Andrews of Alton, and Mrs. Ben (Fern Lyzen) Weeda of Alliance, Neb.; a nephew, Roy Goodlaxson of Guthrie Center; four great-nieces and six great-nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 15 at the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City with Vernon Spinner and Mark Carmen officiating. Interment followed at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton.
