Hattie Alons, 91, of Hull died Monday, October 3, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
A memorial service was Friday at 11 a.m. .at American Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Steven Bierly officiating. Interment was at Sheridan Township Cemetery, near Boyden. Mrs. Alons was born February 10, 1914, on a farm southeast of Sheldon, the daughter of Arie and Johanna (Hofland) Tensen. She lived with her family in Ocheyedan for a few years and then moved with them to Newkirk. As a young adult, she did housekeeping at the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City and also in private homes. On November 4, 1936, she married Gerrit Alons at his parents home near Hospers. They farmed near Hospers until 1941, when they moved to a farm near Boyden. In 1976, they retired into Boyden.
They moved to the Colony House in Hull in March of 2002. In June of 2004, they became residents of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Her husband died January 3, 2005, in George, after 68 years of marriage. She was a member of American Reformed Church in Hull. She was formerly a member of First Reformed Church in Boyden, where she participated in the women's organizations. She introduced her children to Jesus by reading Bible stories and studying their Sunday school and. catechism lessons with them. She enjoyed being a homemaker, caring for her family. She liked cooking and shopping, and she crocheted afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was able to play the harmonica by ear.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Dwayne and Clarice Alons of Hull; two daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Bob Mantel and Glenda and John De Koster, all of Hull; nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Verburg of Sheldon; two sisters-inlaw, Tillie Tensen of Hull and Maggie Alons of Sanborn; and many nephews and nieces.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Harry, Joe and Pete Tensen, and an infant; and four sisters, Kate Postma-Mae Van Aalsburg, and NellDekker. Memorials will be directed to the American Reformed Church building fund.
