Donald Alvin Vande Pol was born July 26, 1929 at Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Dick and Etta (Eastman) Vande Pol. He attended school at Ireton, Iowa. Don farmed until 1949, then moved to Hawarden. He married Geraldine Rice in 1953. Don worked as a carpenter for Nordis American Homes, then he worked for Bill Hill and was a partner with LeRoy Heeren for several years. He
retired from carpentry in 1979. Don married Shirley Rhead in 1976 and has lived in Beresford, South Dakota since 1983. With Don's love of wood working, he and Shirley made wooden crafts and attended many fairs with their projects. They spent a lot of time camping, fishing and serving concessions at area auctions. Don was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden and then the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Don died Thursday, July 6, 2000 at his residence at the age of 70 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Debbie and George Bushby of Hawarden, Barb and Tracy Homandberg of Hudson. South Dakota, Brenda Vande Pol of Hawarden, Genlyn Vande Pol and special friend Steve Sturges of South Sioux City, Nebraska and Michelle Vande Pol of Beresford; sons, Ronald Vande Pol and wife Ruth of Moville, Iowa and Barry Vande Pol and wife Teresa of Hawarden; 3 step daughters, Kelly and Bill Lind of Alcester, South Dakota, Karla Bryson and special friend Bobby Berge of Wakonda, South Dakota, Kristi and Jay Hanson of Canton, South Dakota; grandchildren, Stacey and Stephanie Bushby, Jennah and Abby Homandberg, Melissa and Brandon Vande Pol, Alex Vande Pol, Alyssa Vande Pol, Brandi, Brittany and Brooke Vande Pol, Amy and Chelsea McAninch, Nicholas, Doug and Trevor
Bryson, Tadrah and Turner Kaskie, Tiff and Liz Hanson; 4 step grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Eva Zalme of Ireton, Iowa and Lucille and Martin Huckle of LeMars,
Iowa; 2 brothers, Arthur and Mae Vande Pol of Watertown, South Dakota and Wayne and Mary Vande Pol of Hawarden; several nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers,
Lewis and John.
