Mrs. Van Ek, 66, Dies in Sheldon Home

Mrs. A. Van Ek, resident for nearly thirty-five years in Sioux Center, died at the Sheldon Home last Thursday at the age of sixty-six. The funeral services were held in the First Christian Reformed Church, conducted by Rev. Bajema from Sheldon and Rev. Dykstra of Sioux Center.

Mrs. Van Ek was born in the Netherlands, came with her parents to America as a baby, settling in Illinois. As a young girl she came with her family to Iowa, marrying Andrew Van Ek then of Orange City forty-three years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Van Ek were the parents of six children, Martha and Katie deceased, Gertrude, Jacob, Mrs. J. Van Steenwyk and Clarence still living. Three grandchildren survive, and of Mrs. Van Ek's family a brother, Mr. J. Nieuwenhof of Yakima, Wash., Mrs. W. Schouten of Rock Valley and Mrs. John Dykstra of Hull.

For thirty-four years the Van Ek family lived in Sioux Center. Mr. Van Ek was a baker for some time and for many years a grocer. About three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Van Ek retired to the Sheldon Home.

Among those out of town attending the funeral of Mrs. A. Van Ek were the following: Mrs. J. Ten Kate and daughter, Mrs. Huiskens, Mr. Herman Ten Kate, Dr. and Mrs. H. De Boer all from Edgerton and Mrs. Jake Versteeg and son from Chandler, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Kooiman and Mrs. Gerrit P. Kooiman from Boyden and Mrs. Suzie Postma from the Holland Home and undoubtedly some more we have overlooked.

Andrew Van Ek's obituary (Sioux Center News, June 6, 1946) gives his wife's name as Marie Niewenhof, as does a biographical article on him published in the Sioux Center News (July 31, 1941). Their son Jacob's obituary (Sioux Center News, Oct. 18, 1994) gives his mother's name as Mary (Nieuwenhof) Van Ek.

However, the Sioux County Cemetery Index has Van Ek, Andrew, 1863-1946, spouse Catharina; Van Ek, Catharina, 1865-1931, spouse Andrew.
