A. Van Ek Passed Away At Sheldon

Andrew Van Ek was born "In't Meer by Heerenveen," Netherlands, December 19, 1863. He came to the United States when he was eighteen years of age and became a naturalized citizen in 1889. After living in Michigan for two and one half years, he moved to Orange City, where in 1887, he married Marie Niewenhof [i.e., Nieuwenhof]. Six children were born to them. His wife and three children, Katie, Gertrude, and Martha Winter preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Ida Van Steenwyk of Sioux Center, and sons Clarence of Minneapolis, Minn. and Jacob of Boulder, Colorado, and four grandchildren, Elma Clarice, Norman Glenn, and Mary Martha Van Steenwyk and Jerry Marvin Winter.

Fifty-two years ago he started in business in Sioux Center and continued in that enterprise until his retirement in 1917 when he and his wife joined the Holland Home in Sheldon where he lived until his death May 30, 1946.

Funeral services were held at the Sheldon Holland Home and later at the J. W. Van Steenwyk home and Central Reformed Church. Rev. R. Meengs officiated.

Subsequent news notes state that his estate was valued at about $6,586.24, consisting of cash, bonds and stocks. (see Hawarden Independent, November 28, 1946, p. 7)

His entry in the Sioux County Cemetery Index gives his wife's name as Catharina.
