Miss Katie Van Ek--oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Van Ek and one of Sioux Center's fairest flowers--was plucked by the ruthless hand of death Wednesday evening at seven-thirty May eighteenth 1910. Death was not altogether unexpected--still sudden--sick only twelve days. Hopes were entertained that she would gain strength enough to be able to seek a climate suited to her ailments. She had been suffering from the dread disease tuberculosis which brought on hemorrhage of the lungs. Miss Van Ek was [bottom of newspaper page eroded away] in her fathers restaurant where she clerked. She was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church and one of the prominent members of the Young Ladies Mission Board of that place.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. P. Van Wyk from the house at one thirty and the Christian Reformed church at two o'clock on Saturday. It was one of the largest funerals ever seen in Sioux Center. Though on Saturday--the church was crowded and every business house was closed. The following were among the out of town friends and relatives: Jacob Ver Steeg and family and James Ten Cate of Minnesota, J. J. Dykstra and family of Hull, William Schouten and family and Bertha Bockhouse of Perkins, J. Ypma, Ben Aalders and families, Mrs. Roel De Jong and children of Orange City, Marinus Bomgaars and family and O. Peters of Alton, H. De Wilt of Newkirk. She is survived by her father and mother and two brothers and three sisters. The sympathy of the community is with the bereaved family.
