Leola Bushmer
Leola Bushmer, 94, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, in McAllen, Texas. Leola was born on April 14, 1918, in Irene, S.D., to Herbert R. and Beryl (Moe) Christiansen. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City, where she met Alexander Bushmer. They were married August 29, 1939, and moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Pentagon in the finance department for the civil service until he graduated from medical school.
Alex was a medical doctor in Orange City for 30 years. Leola was active in Women's Club, Sioux County Medical Society, Rambler's Club and the American Reformed Church. They retired to Mercedes, Texas, where she taught aquasize classes and enjoyed competing in shuffleboard tournaments, winning many trophies. They later moved to Camelot in McAllen, Texas, and after a few years to Waterford Gardens in Mission, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Survivors include her daughters Cheryl Plender of Orange City, Ramona Hofkamp of Flandreau,
S.D., and Mercedes, Texas, and Renee Palmer of Sacramento, Calif. Leola is also survived by nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother Maynard Christiansen of Viborg, S.D., and sister Vernice Kingsbury of Ponca, Neb.
