A Pioneer passes away
Chas. Whalen, one of the pioneer homesteaders of Sioux county died in the hospital at Aberdeen last Thursday after an illness of only about a week. The remains were brought to Hawarden and the funeral was held Sunday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. A. R. Scott. His son Harley Whalen of Akron, and daughter Mrs. A. V. Elliott of Beresford came to attend the services. One sister , Mrs. G. W. Klinefelter of Alexandria and two brothers, Geo. Whalen of North Dak. And Andrew Whalen of Reinbeck Iowa were also present.
Chas. Whalen, was born in Troy, New York April 5th 1841, died in Aberdeen SD. Jul 29, 1909. He was the eldest son of Mary and Chas. Whalen. At the age of 8 years he moved with his parents to Elgin IL, Again in 1851 moved to Iowa settling on a farm near what is now the city of Waterloo. They were among the pioneer settlers of Black Hawk, county. After a number of years were spent in the activities of farm life he left his home and journeyed to California returning in three years to Waterloo, IA where in September of 1865 he was untied in marriage to Mrs. Lois Phelps. In 1870 they moved to Sioux County, IA settling near Hawarden of which place he was a resident till the death of his wife which occurred on July 12th 1902. He is survived thy three children Mrs. A. R. Scott of Hawarden; Mrs. A. V. Elliott of Beresford SD and A. H. Whalen of Akron Iowa also by four sisters and three brothers; Mrs. Mary Gibson of Hudson SD; Mrs. A. W. Storer of Hooker OK; Lawrence Whalen of Enid OK; George Whalen of Strasburg ND; Mrs. E. French of Sioux City; Mrs. Anna Kleinfelter of Alexandria SD and A. M. Whalen of Reinbeck IA.
