From the Alton Democrat of Jul 26, 1902
A shocking accident occurred at Maurice this Friday morning at about eight o'clock. The west bound freight which left here about seven caught a section crew on the tack a mile west of Maurice and Section Foreman E. Van Maanen was instantly killed and another man badly injured. They were on a crossing just around a sharp curve and did not hear of see the train till it was close upon them. The men were on the car which was hurled into the air by the pilot. The deceased was a man of family.

Note - in the ancestry.com account this translation of a later article in the Dutch Sioux Center News. •
Lawyer C.A. Irwin appeared before District Court in Orange City on behalf of Mrs. Evert van Maanen regarding a compensation claim against Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company in the amount of $15,000 due to her husband being killed by a frieght train on 25 Jul 1902. It may be remembered how van Maanen last summer was so unfortunate as to have been killed because a handcar on which he and some of his helpers were returning home was overtaken by a train . The train is said to have been an extra train of which the men had no knowledge.
