Bob Groff
James Robert (Bob) Groff, 92, died in Anchorage, Alaska, on June 7, 2012.
Groff was born in Topeka, Kan., January 12, 1920. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1937 and the University of Kansas in 1941 with a degree in business administration. After being discharged as a captain after serving four years with the U.S. Army in the Pacific, he graduated from the Washburn School of Law in 1952. In 1955 he began practicing law in Topeka with the law firm eventually known as Schroeder, Heeney, Groff and Coffman. He retired from the firm in 1990. He was a member of Topeka Downtown Rotary and served as president and district governor. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He moved to Sioux Center to be close to one of his children.
He helped start the Trust Department at the American State Bank in Sioux Center and he also worked as an attorney through Klay, Veldhuizen, Bindner, De Jong and Jacobsma, PLC in Orange City. He also gave of his time at Kinsey Elementary School helping students read. He was a member of Lions Club and then Kiwanis. He was also a member of First Reformed Church.
Survivors are his daughter, Kyle and her husband Val Rader of Anchorage, Alaska, and his daughter-in-law, Janet Byer Groff of Sioux Center; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one foster great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Ann Overton Groff; and his son, Bruce Groff, DVM.
