Mrs. Carol Van De Hoef, age 82, of Sheldon, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008, at her residence.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, March 18, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers. The Rev. Jay Wesseling will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery.
Carol, who was originally named Julia June, was born on June 5, 1925, in Decatur, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Tippery) Henson. She lived with her parents and seven siblings in Mondamin, where she attended elementary school. After the death of her mother, she moved to the Children's Home in Council Bluffs.
In 1937, she was lovingly adopted by Arie and Jennie (Vander Velde) Kuyper, who renamed her A. Carol. They farmed west of Newkirk, where she graduated from high school in 1945.
On May 24, 1945, Carol married William J. Van De Hoef at Newkirk. They farmed north of Newkirk for over thirty years. They then moved to Sheldon, where she was a waitress for over fifteen years. The couple also owned Bill's Warehouse Market, which they operated until health problems forced their retirement.
After being separated from her biological family for 55 years, she was reunited with her four brothers and youngest sister on her 65th birthday. Bill passed away on May 7, 2005, in Sheldon.
She was a lifetime member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Golden Hour Circle and sang in the Women's Chorus. In 1988, she became an honorary member of the Women's Army Corps Veterans Chapter 62 (for mother's only).
Mrs. Van De Hoef enjoyed watching television, reading, listening to audio books, and raising house plants. She liked writing poetry and won several awards and certificates of recognition and appreciation, including third place in a contest in the New York Times newspaper. She loved spending time with family and friends, especially taking short trips with her daughter.
