Mathilda Van Beek
Mrs. Mathilda Van Beek, age 85, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2006, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, November 21, at 2:30pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Interment will be prior to the service at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton.
Mathilda was born on February 27, 1921, at Perkins, the daughter of John and Elsie (Wassink) Broek. She was raised northwest of Sioux Center, where she attended country school. As an adult, she worked for Dr. Maris in the maternity home in Sioux Center.
On December 9, 1947, she married John A. Van Beek at Sioux Center. They first made their home by Orange City for five years. The next 51 years, they lived at Ireton, where she was a homemaker. In August of 2004, they returned to Orange City, where they became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home. On October 18 of this year, she transferred to Happy Siesta.
Mrs. Van Beek was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. For over fifty years, she belonged to the Ireton Christian Reformed Church, where she was the bulletin editor for over twenty years and participated in the Ladies Aid.
She enjoyed crocheting, baking, and playing games with her children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of almost 59 years; three children and their spouses, Marilyn and Sherwyn Bolkema and Alan and Barb Van Beek, all of Orange City; and Marla and Dwight Sas, of Hull; seven grandchildren, Shelley, and her husband, Rick Hoogeveen; Brenda, and her husband, Josh Vermeer; Adam Van Beek; Emily Van Beek; Michael Sas; Kevin Sas; and Angie Sas; three great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, John and Gert Broek, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a sister and her husband, Chris and Pete Schouten, of Sioux Center; three sisters-in-law, Cornelia Broek, of Rock Valley; and Cora Broek and Berdie Broek, both of Sioux Center; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Franken and Gaynor Te Grotenhuis, both of Sioux Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, David Broek; Arend Broek; Bill Broek, and his wife, Ina; and Cornie Broek; and four sisters, Nell Franken: Marg, and her husband, Bill De Koter; Bertha, and her husband, Clarence Klein; and Elsie Te Grotenhuis.
