Marlo C. Waterbury, 79, of McCook Lake, SD, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 29, 2003.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 2 at Wesley United Methodist Church of Akron with Reverend Laurence Streyffeler officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Pallbearers were Larry Waterbury, Randy Waterbury, Richard "Sam" Waterbury, Christopher Waterbury, Donald "Pete" Peters and Dewain Fravel.

Mr. Waterbury was born June 21, 1924 on his parents' farm in rural Union County. He was the son of Albert and Minnie (Kaelke) Waterbury. He graduated from Akron High School in 1942. He joined the Army as a paratrooper in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 20, 1947, he married Jean I. Anderson of Hawarden.

Mr. Waterbury had been a farmer, construction worker, taxidermist and small business owner. He was a local and family historian. He also was an avid bottle and antique collector. In 1983, the Sioux County Museum and Historical Association named him "Collector of the Year." Marlo also loved being outdoors. He spent his time hunting, fishing and collecting just about anything that he could find.

He was an active member of the Union County Historical Society, of which he was the vice president. He was also a member of the American Legion, Nebraska Antique Bottle Collectors, Redwing Stoneware Collectors, and Fort Dodge Stoneware Collectors.

Marlo's other love was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his extended family. Whether he was teaching his outdoor skills or sharing family history, Marlo enjoyed his time surrounded by his loved ones.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; son, Mark, Omaha; daughter, Mary and son-in-law, Don Fuxa, McCook Lake; three grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, Floyd Jr. and Sharon Waterbury, Joyce Smith, Sandy and Marlin Osterbuhr, Joan Coleman, all of Akron, Audrey and Keith Seamonds, LaSalle, MI, Beth and Dale Sykes, Helena, MI, Larry Waterbury, Sioux City, Fay "Babe" Waterbury, Wichita, KS and Janiece Waterman, Hawarden.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fay and Floyd; two nephews, Marlin Waterbury and Kervin Waterbury; and his daughter-in-law, Rose Annn Waterbury.
