From the Alton Democrat, October 27, 1906:

P. Balkema died Saturday morning at half past five at the age of eighty years and five months. He leaves a wife and eight children. They moved here from Gibbsville, Wisconsin eighteen years ago and lived here ever since. He was a Christian and there should be no doubt but that his soul rests in peace. The sympathy goes with the relatives and especially with his aged wife. Funeral services were held Monday noon--Rev. Heemstra and Rev. Van Duine of Alton--both preached interesting sermons.
