Hawarden Independent, January 5, 1933

Mrs. Grace Dawson of Sioux City, former resident of Hawarden, passed away about 9 o'clock last Friday morning in the Methodist hospital in that city from heart trouble which followed an attack of flu and pneumonia. About two months ago Mrs. Dawson submitted to an operation and she never recovered from the ordeal. She was removed to the home of her son, Frank Dawson, some time after the operation and while there about three weeks ago she suffered an attack of pneumonia. About two weeks ago she again returned to the hospital where she passed away last Friday.

Funeral services wee held at 3:30 last Saturday afternoon from the Christy Funeral Home in Sioux City with Dr. G. T. Notson in charge. Her remains were taken to Parker, SD., Monday and laid beside her husband, who preceded her in death several years ago.

Grace Mullen was born in Colo, Iowa, March 27, 1879, and lived there during early childhood and then with her parents she came to Hawarden and lived here until 1904 when she was married to Ed. R. Dawson and she went to Parker to make her home. She made her home at Parker for eight years when she returned to this city and made her home here for a short time. The family then moved to Miami, FLA, where they resided for several years and in 1923 she again returned to Hawarden, making her home here until 1930 when she moved to Sioux City and she made her home in that city since that time. She is survived by three sons, Frank, Lloyd and Paul of Sioux City and one brother, Harry Mullen of Hawarden. One brother, Rex Mullen passed away about four years ago. She was with him during his last lingering illness and tenderly cared for him until death came. Another brother, Arthur F. Mullen, passed away July 17, 1932.

Mrs. Dawson possessed a happy disposition and even through great trials in life she always looked on the brighter side. She cared for many sick people and those to whom she administered always spoke of her kindliness and tenderness towards them. She was a devoted mother and the welfare of her sons was always foremost in her mind.
