Hawarden Independent, Sept. 11, 1941

Funeral services for Charles Dawson, 34, who died Friday of a heart attack, were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church. The Rev. R. F. Chapler officiated.

Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery. Mr. Dawson was found dead in bed at his home in the northeast part of town Friday morning. He apparently had passed away peacefully in the night.

Charles West Dawson was born April 6, 1907, on a farm in Union County, the son of Charles & Ellinor Dawson. He remained on the farm until he was 12 years of age when he came to Hawarden with his parents. He lived here the last 22 years of his life, and attended Hawarden high school.

Mr. Dawson was a mechanic. He was employed for several years at the L.G. Everist Co. gravel pit.

He enlisted in the army last fall, but was rejected because of his heart, the army doctors warning him his condition was dangerous.

Mr. Dawson was ill Thursday, and remained in bed. His sister, Miss Anne Dawson, a nurse, got up twice during Thursday night to look after him, but found him apparently asleep both times. She did not look closely either time and he may have been dead when she made her second trip to his bedside.

Mr. Dawson is survived by his mother, Mrs. Charles Dawson; two brothers, John of Hawarden and Thomas of Hudson; and three sisters, Miss Anne Dawson of New York, N.Y., Miss Laura Dawson of Winnetka, Ill, and Mrs. Fred Marshall of Leetonia, Ohio.

Mr. Dawson never married.

Out of town relatives present at Mr. Dawson's last rites were Mrs. Marshall, her daughter Mildred and son Dayton of Leetonia; Joe Dawson and son William of Benton, Wis., Mrs. E. H. Hancher of Waterloo, IA, and Miss Laura Dawson of Winnetka.
