Hawarden Independent, April 23, 1936

Mrs. A. C. Van Hofwegen passed away at her home in this city at 11 o'clock last Thursday morning following a brief illness from pneumonia. She had practically recovered from pneumonia but due to complications she was unable to overcome her ailment.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. A. Folkema in charge. Interment was made in the cemetery at Lebanon beside her husband.

Elizabeth Cornelia DeGraff was born at North Braband, Holland, Dec. 22, 1866, and passed away in Hawarden April 16, 1936,having attained the age of 69 years, 3 months and 24 days. She was married to Adrian Van Hofwegen in The Netherlands and to this union were born 14 children, five having preceded her in death, all passing away in Holland, four in infancy and one son died at the age of 26 years. She came to America with her family in 1915 and came directly to Sioux County, living on farm near the State Park the first year. The family then moved onto a farm in Union County, SD, southwest of Chatsworth, Later they moved onto a farm near Lebanon but a number of years ago Mr. & Mrs. Van Hofwegen retired and they purchased a home at Lebanon where Mr. Van Hofwegen passed away in 1930. She continued to live at Lebanon until a year ago when she came to Hawarden to make her home. She was a faithful Christian and while she lived at Lebanon she was a member of the Christian Reformed Church and when she came to Hawarden she transferred her membership to the Christian Reformed Church here.

She is survived by nine children. They are Mrs. C. DeBie; Mrs. Teunis Vander Hoef and Adrian, Herman and Bastian Van Hofwegen of Hawarden; Dick, Arie and William Van Hofwegen of Lebanon, and Mrs. A. Ruinard of Rotterdam, Netherlands. She also leaves 40 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
