Memorial services for Charles J. Van Leeuwen, 75, of Inwood were held Friday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with private burial of the cremains prior to the services.

He died Monday, April 12, 1993 in the Canton-Inwood Hospital, Canton, South Dakota.

Mr. Van Leeuwen was born May 24, 1915 in Boyden. He grew up in Boyden and when he was 13, he moved with his family to Rock Rapids where he continued his education.

On September 4, 1938 he married Laura Lauck in Rock Rapids. They operated Van's Food Market in Rock Rapids for 20 years. He later worked as a meat cutter for Tony's IGA Store in Rock Rapids for 10 years and he drove school bus for Central Lyon School District for 10 years. He retired in 1983. In 1990, the couple moved to Inwood where he was active in the establishment of the Inwood Rescue Squad and the building of the Inwood Community Center.

Survivors include the wife; one son, David of Indianapolis, Indiana; one daughter, Mrs. Gene (Jolene) Soehl of Davenport; three grandsons and one sister, Cora Heimendinger of Oskaloosa.
