Sioux Center News, September 29, 1938

Hospers - Mrs. Arie Van Kley, Sr., nee Johanna Van Iperen was born in Leerbroek, Netherlands on January 15, 1870 and died Sept. 20, 1938 in the St. Joseph hospital at Sioux City. Aged 68 years and 8 months. Ms. Van Kley who was partly blind and hard of hearing fell in her home and broke her hip. She was taken to Sioux City Sunday in the ambulance and on account of her frail health and advanced condition of diabetis a necessary operation could not be performed and she passed away Tuesday evening. Johanna Van Iperen came to America with her parents and family and was married to Alewyn Van Iperen in 1889. In 1897 her husband died leaving her with two daughters, now Mrs. Lillian Van Kley of Sibley, and Mrs. Stella Houtsma of Orange City. In 1901 she married Arie Van Kley Sr., and to this union six children were born, one of whom preceded her in death. The surviving children are: Nellie (Mrs. Bert Menning of Newkirk); Arie of Ashton; Gertrude, (Mrs. F. De Jong of Blue Earth, Minn); Pearl (Mrs. John Melles of Rock Rapids): and Peter Van Kley of Alton who with their father and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn a great loss. The family lived in this vicinity for years and since April in Hospers. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, 1 o'clock in the home and 1:30 in the Newkirk Reformed Church. Rev. Z. Roetman of Newkirk and Rev. G. Doctor of Hospers officiated. Interment was made in the Presbyterian cemetery. Mrs. Van Kley also left a brother Schalk Van Iperen of Alton and two sisters, Mrs. Cor. Busyerd of Leerbroek, Netherlands, and Mrs. A. Van Meeteeren of Redlands, Calif.
