John Lankhorst, 86, of Hawarden, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Avera McKennan Hospice in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Service was at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden with Rev. Laird Keever of the Associated Church officiating. John Lankhorst was born May 5, 1913, near Hurley, SD, the son of Harry John Lankhorst, Sr. and Eva Aleida Visser. John married Imogene Hatton on October 17, 1939. This marriage took place in Hawarden. Together they ran the Jack and Jill Grocery Store in Hawarden. They retired in 1974. John moved to the Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden in April of 1994. Imogene died on June 23, 1995. John always enjoyed cutting meat, working with other meat cutters and especially enjoyed visits with his customers. Surviving relatives include his son, Dr. Barry Lankhorst and his wife, Dr. Patricia Wirtz, of Sioux Falls, SD; and three grandchildren, Christina, Michael and Abby. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jake and Harry; and sister, Geraldine Lankhorst. Memorials may be directed to the Karen Parker fund for kidney patients, which is a part of the Sioux Falls Area Foundation.
