H. J. Lankhorst, Former Business Man Here, Dies
Harry J. Lankhorst, sr., 83, retired Hawarden business man, died Wednesday evening at his home following a month's illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon (Thurs day) at the Associated church with Rev. John C Thorns officiating. Interment will be in Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral home.

Mr Lankhorst was born August 12 1872, at Welsum by Olst, Netherlands the son of Hendrik Jan and Lulofje Voorhorst Lankhorst. He was baptized in the Dutch Reformed church at Welsum and became a member of the church on March 17, 1891, at Deventer, Neth. Years late: he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church at Hurley, S. D. and later to the Hawarden church of which he was elder for many years.

Mr. Lankhorst grew up at Weisum where he attended the public schools. He was apprenticed at the age of 13 to a meat merchant at Deventer, also in the Netherlands He became manager of meat markets in many cities in various parts of tine Netherlands

In 1898 he came to America, establishing a meat market at Monroe, S. D. On September 30, 1900, he married Everdina Visser They were the first couple to be married in the new Sandham Memorial Reformed church at Monroe, S. D.. which he helped build and acted as substitute pastor. To this union were born eight children, five of whom preceded him in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Lankhorst came to Hawarden in December of 1921 at which •' time he purchased the Tom Huyke meat market. They later moved to their present location and added groceries and a locker plant, which was operated by his sons John and Jake until the latter’s death in 1950. The Red and White market is now operated by John Lankhorst. Mr. Lankhorst retired from business in 1950, the same year hand his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Survivors include the widow three children, Harry, John and Jerry, all of Hawarden, and four grandchildren.
