Hawarden Independent (3 Aug 1933)

Archie M . Duncan, a pioneer resident of Union county, SD., passed away early last Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Perle Ellis, in this city. Mr. Duncan had been in failing health for a long time, being sufferer from Bright’s disease which finally developed into Uremia which caused the death. On July 11th he was brought from his home, north of Hawarden to the home of his daughter here in order that he might receive the benefit of modern home convenience as the heat was a great trial to him.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Hudson with Rev. Blackburn of Beresford in charge. Interment was made in the Hudson cemetery

Archie M. Duncan was born at Owen Sound Canada, Jan 28, 1860, so at the time of his death had attained the age of 73 years and 6 months. While he was yet a small child his parents moved to Effingham County, ILL. Here they lived on a farm until the year 1871 when they came to Union county, SD., and took a homestead a few miles south of Beresford, where Mr. Duncan grew to manhood. On June 14, 1893, he was united in marriage with Nellie Oakes of Hawarden and they went to housekeeping on a farm adjoining the homestead of his parents. They remained there until February, 1910, when they moved into Hawarden and made their home here for a number of years until he purchased a farm six and one-half miles north of Hawarden onto which they moved and which has since continued to be their home.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, all of whom, with the widow, survive him. The children are Robert Duncan of Hudson, Mrs. Chas Gourley of Hudson, and Mrs. Perle Ellis of Hawarden , and Viola and Sally Duncan at home. There were ten grandchildren. In addition he leaves one brother, Johnnie Duncan of Beresford, and six sisters, Mrs. Janet Thompson of Minneapolis; Mrs. Marian Godfrey, Mrs. Elizabeth Eleeson and Mrs. Ella Wilson all of Sioux Falls; Mrs. . Evelyn Hoffland of Valier, Mont., and Mrs. Mary Staley of Beresford.

Mr. Duncan was a long active in community affairs in the localities in which he resided. He served as road supervisor in Virginia Township for a number of years. As a young man he united with the Baptist church at Sunnyside during the pastorate of Elder Freeman. He was devoted husband and father and in addition to the members of his immediate family, leaves a host of friends who mourn his passing. He had enjoyed very good health until about ten years ago when he began to suffer from heart trouble and during the past few years suffered from complication and weak heart action which hindered carrying on his farm work although until recently he was able to look after chores and other light work about the farm, but after coming to his daughter’s home here recently his strength was too far exhausted to permit recovery.
