Hawarden Independent, March 6, 1941

James Marshall, a pioneer resident of the Hudson vicinity and well known to many people of Hawarden, passed away at his home late last Wednesday night, February 26th, following a long illness. At one time he was cared for at a hospital in Sioux Falls, but shortly before his death he returned home.

Funeral services wee held at the Congregational Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and the services wee attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Burial was made at Hudson.

James Christopher Marshall, son of William & Mary Marshall was born at Rockford, Ill., February 17, 1867, and passed away February 26, 1941, so was just past 74 years of age at the time of his death. He came with his parents to Dakota Territory 72 years ago when but two years old and continued to live within a few miles of his father's homestead ever since. He received his schooling in the Virginia School. He was united in marriage with Mary Ann Nelson of Hudson on September 28, 1892, and they were the parents of two daughters, one dying in infancy. He was a member of the Congregational church and was a regular attendant and worker as long as his health permitted.

He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Louella Broscha, and two grandsons, Neil & Dale Broscha, of Hudson. He also leaves one brother, George of Hudson and three sisters, Mrs. Jesse Frank of Hawarden; Mrs. Frank Hampton of Waubay, SD, and Mrs. Bert Horner of Alcester. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and an infant daughter.

Among Hawarden people who attended the funeral were Mrs. Jesse Frank and son Willis; Mr. & Mrs. Fred Finnie; Mrs. C. E. Marshall; Mr. & Mrs. A. J. Elbert; Mr. & Mrs. Harley Marshall; Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson; Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Olson and Mr. & Mrs. John A. Johnson.
