Hawarden Independent, December 6, 1934

Dr. J. H. Brower, pioneer physician of Calliope and Hawarden, died suddenly at Spokane, Wash., last Friday. According to reports received here, Dr. Brower who was 82 years of age, was found dead in his car on a highway, evidently the victim of a heart attack.

Dr. Brower was one of the early practitioners in northwest Iowa when the country was new and vast stretches of prairie lay between settlements. He located in Calliope in 1880. The life of a country doctor in those days was one of hardship and Dr. Brower endeared himself to the hearts of the early settlers here through his willingness to face any sort of weather conditions in order to minister to those who were sick and in need of his services. In addition to his medical practice Dr. Brower conducted a drug store in Calliope for many years, occupying the building which was moved from Calliope to Hawarden nearly forty years ago and which has since been occupied by The Independent office. Dr. Brower was one of the last of the business and professional men in the old town of Calliope to join the migration to the newer town of Hawarden but finally moved his office here and continued in practice for a number of years. In 1902 he sold his practice here to the late Dr. F. J. McAllister and with his family moved to Spokane, Wash., where he has since continued to make his home. During most of this time he has continued actively in the practice of medicine in Spokane.

He is survived by his widow and two sons, John Brower of Spokane and Fred Brower of Columbus, Ohio.
