Sioux County Herald of Aug 1,1900 p. 5
Death of Mrs. Gerrit J. De Haan.
Last Friday, July 27th, at 2:30 in the afternoon, Anna, wife of Mr. Gerrit J. De Haan, departed this life at the age of twenty-six years and ten months, from that dreaded disease, consumption. Although Mrs. De Haan's death had been hourly expected for several days, it nevertheless brought deepest sorrow to her relatives and friends. The first symptoms of the fatal disease which caused her death made its appearance about seven or eight months ago, and since that her sufferings have been intense, but she bore them uncomplainingly and patiently awaited the Master's summons which she knew would come at an distant day.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Nieuwendorp, who reside two miles west of Orange City, she was united in marriage to Mr. De Haan April, 1894. Three children have been born to them, one son and two daughters, the eldest of whom is five years and the youngest seven months old. Besides her husband and children, she leaves her aged parents, five sisters and tour brothers to mourn her departure. Her death is a sad blow to her husband and an irreparable loss to the little children who will never know the kind care and tender caresses of mother. Mrs. De Haan was a Christian woman and the hope of a re-uniting of the broken family circle in the great beyond is a cheering solace to the bereaved ones. The funeral occurred last Sunday afternoon o'clock from the First Reformed church, of which deceased was a devoted member, and was conducted by Dr. Steffens assisted by the Rev. M. Kolyn. The funeral was one of the largest that ever occurred in the city; hundreds of relatives and friends assembled to pay the last sad tribute of respect to all that was earthly of one whom they loved and esteemed in life. THE HERALD desires to commingle its sympathies with those of the large circle of friends of the bereaved family.
