Arend Sliekers was born in Holland, August 22, 1853 and died Saturday March 31, 1906, aged fifty-two years, seven months, and nine days. He was united in marriage with Miss Aaltje Van Engen in 1879. To them were born nine children, all of whom are living except one son John, who died at the age of four. He came to this country in 1885 and united with the Christian Reformed church of this city a good many years ago. He has been the janitor of that church and also of the Christian school for some time. He has apparently been in good health for years, and his last illness commenced only about ten days before his death, when lung fever set in which neither medical skill nor tender care could allay.
He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife and eight children: Mrs. E. Riepma of Maurice, Herm Sliekers of LeMars, Albert, Jantje, Gertrude, Gezina, Jan and Hendrieka, all of whom are living at home. The funeral services were held in the Christian Reformed church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Van Dellen officiating. In his death the home has lost a kind husband and father, the cause of Christianity a consistent disciple, and the community a good and upright citizen.
