Mrs. Dena Verdoorn, age 82, of Newkirk, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Dena was born March 7, 1906, at Alton, the daughter of Edward Roos and Dena Fonkert Roos. On Feb. 4, 1926, she married Henry Verdoorn at Orange City. They farmed at Ashton for three years and then moved to a farm near Newkirk. In 1972 they moved into Newkirk. She was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church and the church's mission fellowship and guild.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Vande Hoef and her husband Robert of Newkirk; son, William Verdoorn and his wife Ginny of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Kerry Nieuwenhuis of Orange City; Susan Sachse of Ottawa, Kan.; DeAnn Vande Hoef of Newkirk; Michael Verdoorn of Orange City; Peggy Merriam of Ringle, Wis.; Kathy Van Berkum of Rock Rapids; and Scott Vande Hoef of Orange City; 10 great-grandchildren; and three brothers and sisters, Nell Vander Schaaf of Viborg, S.D., Edward Roos of Preston, Minn., and Ann Muilenburg of Sheldon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Newkirk Reformed Church with the Rev. Kevin Ver Hoeven officiating. Interment followed at the Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
