Henry Verdoorn, age 87, of Orange City, formerly of Newkirk, died Sunday, March 29, 1992 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Henry was born Feb. 4, 1905 at Boyden, the son of William and Kate (Jurrians) Verdoorn. He was raised in the Boyden-Newkirk area. On Feb. 4, 1926 he married Dena Roos at Orange City. They farmed at Ashton for three years and then moved to a farm near Newkirk. In 1972 they moved into Newkirk. Mrs. Verdoorn died Aug. 30, 1988 at Orange City. In May of 1991 he became a resident of Orange City. He was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church.

Henry was a family man who adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family wil remember him for his many refinishing projects and the wooden toys he made for them.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirley and her husband Robert Vande Hoef of Newkirk; son, William Verdoorn and his wife Ginny of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Kerry Nieuwenhuis of Orange City, Susan Sachse of Ottawa, Kan., DeAnn Vande Hoef of Orange City, Michael Verdoorn of Orange City, Peggy Mirriam of Ringle, Wis., Kathy Van Berkum of Rock Rapids, and Scott Vande Hoef of Orange City; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Daniel Verdoorn of Albert Lea, Minn.; and sister-in-law, Mrs. John (Jeanette) Verdoorn of Long Beach, Calif.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 1 at the Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers, with the Rev. Clarence Van Heukelom officiating. Interment followed at the Newkirk Cemetery under direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
