John Smits
John Smits, age 61, of Maurice, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997 at his home in rural Maurice.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. Rev. Wayne Sneller officiated. Burial was in Sherman Township Cemetery in
Maurice under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, Sioux Center.
John was born Oct. 12, 1935 in rural Ireton, the son of Ted and Anna (De Jong) Smits, Sr. He received his education to the eighth grade at the Center #5 country school. On Feb. 10, 1956 he
married Karleen Toering from Hospers. They lived in rural Maurice where he farmed until 1989 when he was disabled with heart disease. John also worked at Van Beek Implement in Sioux Center and Siouxland Harvestore Inc. in Orange City. Mr. Smits was a lifetime member of the Maurice First Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; his father of Maurice; two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Gerrit VanDer Plaats of Kentwood, Mich., and Colette and.Terry Hofmeyer of Orange City;
three sons and their wives, Todd and Kathy Smits of Orange City, Travis and
Connie Smits of Hornick, and Jason and Gina Smits of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Elizabeth, Abagail and Samuel Van Der Plaats; Carmen and John Hofmeyer; Tara, Traci and Timmy Smits; and Trevor and Justin Smits; two sisters and their husbands, Geraldine and Jim Klein of Sherman, S.D. and Dorothy and Henry Nibbelink of Sioux Center; and one brother and his wife, Ted and Mary Smits, Jr. of White Bear Lake, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his mother and infant brother, Thomas.
