Harold Van Zandbergen
June 22, 1925 - April 2, 2012
Mr. Harold Van Zandbergen, age 86, of Newkirk, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012, at the George Community Good Samaritan Center.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, April 5, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery.

Harold Forrest was born on June 22, 1925, in Orange City, the son of Arie and Trina (Hoffs) Van Zandbergen. He was raised in rural Newkirk, where he attended the Consolidated Schools. He served in the United States military during the Korean Conflict.

On January 15, 1960, he married Eldora Van De Berg in Sioux Center. They farmed at Newkirk, where he operated a corn shelling business and was also a gunsmith, owning Zandy’s Repair. Eldora passed away on July 5, 2000, at Newkirk.

On January 20, 2001, he married Carol (Van Wyk) Mulder at Newkirk. They continued to live at Newkirk, until February of 2011, when they moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In November of 2011, he transferred to the Good Samaritan Center.

Mr. Van Zandbergen was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers, the National Rifle Association, Pheasants Forever, and the Sioux County Cattleman’s Association.

He enjoyed hunting, especially with "The Hounds", fishing, going to gun shows, collecting guns, trap shooting, and playing cards and games. He looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his second wife, Carol; Harold and Eldora’s five children and their spouses, Mikell and Ali Rabih, of Denver, Colorado; Mavis and Jim Schipper, of Hospers; Robert and Robin Van Zandbergen, of Orange City; Martha and Darren Hulst, of Hospers; and Maria and Chad Schwartz, of Primghar; eighteen grandchildren, Aussy Rabih, Mirian Rabih, Ahmad Rabih, Adam (fiance, Haley Williams) Rabih, Dora Rabih, and Layla Rabih; Crystal (husband, Ryan) Steffen; Melissa (husband, Bo) Ryan, Matthew Schipper, and Nathan Schipper; Chris Van Zandbergen, Kevin (wife, Katrin) Van Zandbergen, and Keith Van Zandbergen; Danielle Hulst, Zachary Hulst, and Josiah Hulst; and Braden Schwartz and Caleb Schwartz; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Marion and Ruth Van Zandbergen and Adrian and Carol Van Zandbergen, all of Orange City; a special grand-nephew, Mark De Kock; a few nephews and nieces, several step-children, and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his first wife’s parents, Henry and Della Van De Berg; a nephew, Ward Van Zandbergen; and a niece, Sarah Van Zandbergen.
