ORANGE CITY--Bert Verdoorn, 85, Orange City, formerly of Sheldon, died Saturday, July 12, at Orange City Hospital Long-Term Care Facility.

Services were Wednesday, July 16, at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Bert Verdoorn, son of Wilhelm and Gertie (Vischer) Verdoorn, was born March 4, 1918, in Orange City. He was raised in Orange City. He married Elizabeth Harriet Mantel on July 10, 1942, in Orange City. They first made their home in Omaha, NE, where he worked in an aircraft factory. He then entered the U.S. Army and was awarded a Purple Heart. After World War II, they settled in Sheldon, where he was a milk hauler for the Sibley Creamery. They moved to Orange City in 1968. He then sold decorations for Holiday Lighting for 18 years. They became residents of Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City in April 2003. He transferred to Orange City Hospital Long-Term Care Facility on June 25.

He was a member of First Reformed Church in Orange City and Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Verdoorn of Orange City; a son-in-law, Norman Wolf of Sheldon; two grandsons, three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William Verdoorn of Hospers and Anthony "Tony" Verdoorn of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Wolf; and eight brothers and five sisters, Dick Verdoorn, Jake Verdoorn, Joe Verdoorn, Henry Verdoorn, Ann Oldenkamp, Johnnie Verdoorn as a child, Fannie Oldenkamp, Marie Verdoorn, John Verdoorn, Cornelius "Cornie" Verdoorn, Gertrude Engeltjes, and twins in infancy.

Memorials may be directed to the Cheryl Wolf Early Childhood Development Scholarship at Northwestern College in Orange City.
