CORNIE VERDOORN

Cornelius Benjamin Verdoorn, 87, of Ashton died of cancer on Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997 at his residence.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 at First Reformed Church in Sibley. The Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiated. Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. in Gilman Township Cemetery under the direction of the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Ashton.

Cornie was born Dec. 19, 1909 in Sioux County, the son of William and Gertrude (Vischer) Verdoorn. He was raised in the Orange City area and graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy and Junior College.

He married Diana Luchtenburg on Feb. 22, 1934. The couple lived in George where he was employed with H. B. Janssen General Store. In 1943 they moved to Ashton where he was a Watkins Products dealer and a bookkeeper at the elevator. They operated the Verdoorn Nursing Home in Ashton for 19 years.

Mr. Verdoorn was a member of First Reformed Church where he was an elder and Sunday School teacher, a member of the Sheldon, Iowa Dutch Psalm Singers and the Ashton 100 Club. He served on the board of directors of the Iowa Nursing Home Association and as the clerk for Gilman Township. He was awarded the Governors Leadership Award by Gov. Branstad. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and music.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Larry and Alfreda of Ashton; a daughter and her husband, Carolyn and Richard Belgrad of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Bill and Hattie of Hospers, Bert and Betty and Tony and Ann, all of Orange City; and a sister, Marie Verdoorn of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stanley Belgrad; five brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the International Christian Distributors Inc. or the Ashton Historical Society.
