Adelaide Bernice Hoekstra, 81, of Sioux Center died Friday, January 31, at the Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral service was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Raymond V. "Van" Rathbun officiating. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center,

Mrs. Hoekstra was born July 10, 1921, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Kastein) Wandscheer. She was raised at Sioux Center, where she graduated from high school. She attended Central College in Pella for two years and graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, with a music degree.

On August 27,1943, she married the Rev. John Henry Hoekstra in Sioux Center. They served the Bethel Reformed Church in Lester for four years; the Aurora Reformed Church in Stickney, South Dakota, for four years; the Nooksack Valley Reformed Church in Nooksack, Washington, for four years, the First Reformed Church in Alexander for five years; the Stout Reformed Church in Stout for seven years; and the Faith Reformed Church in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, for seven years. They then retired to Sioux Center.

In 1999, she became a resident of the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home. Her husband died April 19,2002, in Sioux Center. She transferred to Bethany Manor in August of 2002.

She was a homemaker and an organ and piano teacher. She shared her musical talents with the churches she and her husband served, especially working with choirs. She was currently a member of the Central Reformed Church, where she had participated in the women's activities and the adult Sunday school. She also belonged to the Northwest Association of Retired Ministers, Missionaries, and Spouses.

She enjoyed reading, playing piano, and sewing. Survivors include her three sons, James Hoekstra and his wife Bea of Ames, Paul Hoekstra and his wife Lori of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and David Hoekstra of Sioux Center; and five grandchildren. Memorials will be directed to the Central Reformed Church music program.
